FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY

Managed Money Goes Further
The goal of Financial Peace University is not just information – they are looking for transformation! Financial management is only 20% knowledge and 80% behavior. FPU helps break the bad habits that rob people of true financial success. A $100 registration fee covers the 13-week course and includes all study materials. The next class will be starting soon, so please call the church office or email bpcfpu@gmail.com to get your name on the next class roster.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God: and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
1 John 4:7 - 8
When reading my January Bethel Light, an article I read in the Pastor’s Letter got me thinking, “And so I ask you, as we move quickly into a new year, what is going to happen at BPC? Are we going to grow? Are we going to serve? Are we going to tithe? Are we going to bring new people to church? We all have to do it; we all have to be on board because we cannot depend on someone else to do it for us. If we are not serving our community we cannot hope that the community will keep us afloat. If we are not bringing people to church, how are they going to get here?”
I thought about the PW and what we could do this new year if we would bring a friend, neighbor or even a fellow church member to our Circle meetings, here we enjoy fellowship, Bible studies, a little breakfast, lunch, dinner depending on which Circle you attend. What a great ministry this would be, the Circle’s provided layette sets for Pregnancy Resource Center as only one example of our mission to serve and spread our Savior’s teachings. We are witnessing a decline in our Circle’s attendance, for many reason’s, but we can turn this around, ask yourself if you do not attend a Circle meeting if you would like to join a group of wonderful, loving caring ladies serving our Lord? PLEASE JOIN A CIRCLE this year.

In Christ,
Carol MacDonald, Moderator

PW is again going to make layettes for the Pregnancy Resource Center. Everyone likes to go shopping, so here is a chance to shop for baby clothes and other baby items that new mothers could use for their newborn. Here are some ideas: onesies, girl & boy outfits, booties/socks, cribsheets, receiving blankets, rattles, hooded towel sets and wash cloths, sweaters and hats. Please leave items on the showcase in the Marshall Road entrance lobby. We will be collecting them until Sunday, March 1st.
Thank you in advance.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Perhaps you are looking for a way to help others and meet new friends.  The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets every two weeks on Sundays from 2-4 p.m. in the McMillan Room.  We knit and crochet (you can learn too) shawls for individuals who need a hug or are going through a difficult time.  You can also submit a name of a person you would like to see get a shawl.  We pray that this ministry will extend beyond our church and into the community.  I personally have enjoyed watching it take off from a small beginning.  The meeting dates for January 2009 are January 4th and January 18th from 2-4 p.m. in the McMillan Room.

DEACONS NEED COLLEGE STUDENT ADDRESSES

The Deacons will again be sending Valentine’s Day care packages and cards to our college students who are away at school.  This is our way of showing that the church is concerned about our college students’ large appetites for food as well as their spiritual appetites.  In order to do this, we would greatly appreciate it if you could send your child’s current college address to me (see phone # or email address below) or to the church office.  Please send their address each year, even if they received a care package last year, and even if their address is still the same, to be sure we don’t miss anyone.

Thank you for helping us to remind our college students that the Church is still thinking about them, even when they are away from home.

Questions or concerns, call John Weaver

SOUTH HILLS
INTERFAITH MINISTRIES

The Food Pantry at South Hills Interfaith Ministry has seen requests grow three hundred percent during the past year. Currently, it needs donations of pasta sauce and all varieties of canned pasta, such as spaghetti and ravioli. All types of condiments are requested, especially mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and relish. A critical need for the Food Panty is juice, in bottle or cans, which are family or individual portions.

MISSION & OUTREACH NEWS

The Spring Blood Drive will be held on April 26th.  Look for more details to come.

Support our Troops.  Chaplain Doug Etter was deployed back to Iraq last month and also Austin DeFresne, whose picture is at the bottom of the Narthex steps.  Kim Anderson would like to send a package soon to each of them, so here is a list of things they need: Toiletries, hand & toe warmers, microwavable food, snacks, Tylenol, hard candy, gum, disposable razors and cough drops. You can leave them in the drop box at the bottom of the Narthex steps.

2009 Mission Trip to Mississippi is March 14-21.  As of this writing, the bus is half full and 7 people from Bethel are going.  If you don’t want to miss out on this great opportunity to join our brothers and sisters in the Pittsburgh Presbytery on a week of helping others and making new friends, please call Beth Mundsinger or see her at church.  You don’t want to miss the bus! Preschool News
February, 2009

February is the month when we take special effort to express our love to each other. We will be having special Valentine's Day parties in all of the classes and talking about how we show love to others. We will learn about Presidents Washington and Lincoln in preparation for President's Day and we will continue to work on all of our pre-reading skills. The teachers will be evaluating the children and getting ready for parent conferences which will be held soon.

We are in the middle of Preschool registration. Hopefully, our church members have all registered for next fall. We anticipate Moms & Twos class to fill up fast just as it did last year. We will advertise on the cable TV station and on the church website. Please do your best to promote our Preschool and Child Care Programs. You are our best advertisement! Registration forms may be picked up in the church office or at my office. Please return the completed forms with the registration fee to my mailbox in the church office or drop them off to me personally any weekday.

We have added an enrichment class called, “Curious Kid’s Club” which is held every afternoon and due to begin on February 2. We have also added the opportunity for the children to stay and eat lunch with friends prior to class. It’s a great new program full of fun and learning and we are hoping to fill up with a waiting list.

We are again selling Sarris Easter Candy for the benefit of the Child Care and Preschool. This year we are working towards buying new toys and equipment for the Preschool and Child Care. We rarely have extra money for these types of items in our budget, so any help that you can give us in either buying Easter candy or selling some for us would be greatly appreciated. Order forms are available in the church office. Completed master sheets with a check for the cost of the order made out to Bethel Presbyterian Child Care maybe put in my mailbox in the church office by February 27th. Delivery will be on Tuesday, March 17, 2009.

Thank you all for your help in promoting and supporting our wonderful program. I especially appreciate the encouragement that you give me. It makes a very big job much easier knowing that there is so much prayer and support behind our efforts.

Preschool / Child Care Director

Child Care News
January 2009

Happy 2009! I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season. I really thought during this holiday season about how blessed I really am. I am so fortunate to work with these beautiful children and wonderful staff. I cherish everyday that I walk into this church and get to nurture these children and be such a big part of their lives as well as this wonderful church family. May this next year be even more joyful and fulfilling for all of us.

We all enjoyed our holiday breaks and are ready to continue the year. It is time to get back into the swing of things. Some of the things we will be learning about in January are Owls, Mice, Quilts, Forest Animals, Winter, Penguins, Snow, and Bears. We have several children who will move to their new classrooms this month. What an exciting time for them and their families. We have been working over the last month to help make this a smooth transition for all of them. We are so proud to watch them grow and get to move through the next stage of their lives.

I want to thank Eileen for all the hard work she does here at Bethel Presbyterian Church. She is a tremendous asset to all of the outlets here at church. She will truly be missed! Good luck and best wishes of happiness Eileen!

Happy 2009!!!

Dana Martin – Child Care Director

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

CE is looking for volunteers to be substitute teachers for Sunday School classes. There is usually another teacher in the class with you, so you wouldn’t be on your own. We just like to make sure there are two teachers for each class each week. Also, CE is looking for a teacher for preschool from January until the end of the year to help Matt Mawhinney. Please see Stacey Lucidore if you are interested in either position.

Sunday School students are collecting pennies for Paul again this year. Pennies will be collected the last Sunday of the each month. If each student collects $1/ month, we should reach our goal for sponsoring Paul.

I would like to thank everyone who helped to make the Children’s Christmas Pageant a great success this year. The show couldn’t have gone on without all the help I received. Thanks again!!!

Bethel Presbyterian Church
Music Ministry

I want to thank all the choirs from the Carol Choir to the Chancel and Bell Choirs for a job well done for the season of Advent and Christmas. Your dedication and talents are deeply appreciated and on behalf of the Congregation, thank you!

By the time the next Bethel Light arrives at your household we will be mid-way through the season of Lenten. Now would be a great time to instead of giving something up for Lent, to go the extra mile and increase your study of scripture, increase time for mediation, or let’s say …. how about joining the choir? During the forty days of Lent the choir will be learning some great songs about the trials and tribulations of Christ as we follow Him in the way of the Cross. Our time of solemn meditation will soon give way to the joy of the Risen Lord, so it will be a time to give some serious reflection to Christ’s passion and crucifixion and prepare your hearts for His final triumph over death.

I am inviting all members in the congregation to consider getting involved in the Music Ministry by singing in one of the choirs. Students in the 8th grade and above as well as adults are encouraged to join the Chancel Choir. Students who are in the 1st – 3rd grades are invited to sing in the Children’s choir. Rehearsal times are as follows:

Carol Choir Wednesdays at 5:15p-5:45p
Chancel Choir Wednesdays at 7:30p
Bell Choir Thursdays at 7:30p

I hope that God works upon your heart, and that you prayerfully consider joining our Ministry, as we praise God with our hearts, our voices, and our songs. Hallelujah! Amen!

Yours in Christ…
Dan

Youth Fellowship

Just a few hours go, nine of us returned safely from our five hour drive from Oak Hill, WV. We arrived sore and bruised, but our hearts were full of joy and inspired by the events of the past two days. We departed on Saturday morning only to arrive hours later at the wrong hotel. Luckily, Jesse had decided I was trustworthy enough to borrow his new state of the art GPS system, and with a touch of the finger we were at the right hotel in minutes. Our group was welcomed with open arms by the retreat staff, and I was informed that we were the first group to ever come from Pennsylvania. I heard “it’s not often that people from the north come south to ski” more than a couple times. But as the weekend unfolded, I realized that God brought us south for much more than just the ski slopes.
The messages were given by Pastor Bill Jessup from a church in Stafford, VA. This man was passionate about the word and the kids around him. He was illuminated with God’s love. He began his series talking about mosaics. He had travelled to Barcelona and came across this huge picture of Jesus in the distance. As he got closer to this massive picture, he realized that it was really just a bunch of small pieces of broken glass purposely placed. These jagged pieces were all different and unique from one another. No two pieces were alike. And he told us, just like that mosaic, that we as Christians create this same picture of Christ. We are all different, with special and unique gifts, yet we are all essential to complete the image. We must come together and show the world the bigger picture, the complete picture of Christ, but we all must fulfill our position as well.
We are all broken and jagged like the pieces of glass in the mosaic. Alone, the splintered glass is worthless, possibly dangerous. But when placed in the designated and perfect spot, that piece of glass can shine brightly and be a vital element to complete a majestic image. I want to end with the lyrics to the chorus from my favorite song of the weekend:

“At the cross you beckon me
Draw me gently to my knees, and I am
Lost for words; so lost in love
Sweetly broken
Wholly surrendered”

Lord, I pray we all are sweetly broken so you can use us to show the world who you are.
