At a meeting held on March 13, 1854 it was recommended that a new church be built. The Third Meeting House was erected in 1855. The brick for the building were burned on the church property and the brick from the former building were to be incorporated into the new or disposed of at the discretion of the building committee. While construction proceeded, the congregation held services in Cannon's Chapel (Methodist) and Peter's Creek Baptist Church in Library. The new building had two windows in each end. It was 60 feet by 80 feet by 20 feet high with eighty pews in four rows seating 500 to 550 people. It was heated by four stoves. The communion table was placed in the front center aisle. In 1867 roof repairs were made and a belfry was added. The bell from the first Academy building, which was torn down when the new church was built, was hung in the belfry. That same bell hangs in the tower of the current church building.
The fourth property purchase was made March 1, 1856 for a sum of $500.00 from John F. and Eliza Eggers. This property adjoined the original purchase of 1780 on the east. The fifth purchase consisted of one-tenth acre adjoining the second purchase on the south to correct the property line from the Rev. Dr. George and Mary Marshall for the sum of $1.00. The sixth and seventh property purchases containing about two and one-half acres are additions to the cemetery on the east and the south, purchased October 18, 1866 from the Rev. Dr. George and Mary Marshall for the sum of $593.12. |
